Walking Dead #93
Image Comics
Kirkman, Adlard & Rathburn
The latest issue of the Walking Dead launches into the arc entitled, "A Larger World". The long time reader will find the comic to be fairly familiar covering ground that has mostly been mapped out time and time again. However, the issue does provide a good jump-on point and it also shows an interesting level of character growth from Rick, which even the most loyal reader can appreciate. Overall, this issue is good but doesn't approach greatness, such is the case with many first issues of an arc.

Walking Dead #89

Walking Dead has slow, build up issues and then it has giant blow-up issues. Very rarely does an issue create a problem and accelerate it in the very same issue. However, this issue does just that. For the most part, this issue is about Glenn getting face to face with Nicholas about Rick running the community in such a sudden fashion. The book provides plenty of drama and builds up some strong tension. For the most part this is as entertaining of a read that this series can get without actual bloodshed in it. Of course, I recommend this issue but what else would you expect from this series?

Walking Dead #88

The latest Walking Dead continues to build up to the next big confrontation as the issue deals with subplots and side drama in the interim. As is always the case the book is one of the best reads out there in its character work and presentation. Kirkman is growing some new characters and dealing with new relationships while the next storm grows from within. If you aren't reading this book you are definitely missing out, even if the series has a slow issue from time to time.

Walking Dead #85

The latest issue of Walking Dead proves to be a bit of a breather. Following the insane events of the previous couple of issues, Kirkman gives the characters (and the reader) a chance to get themselves together as the damage is sorted through. It's a good issue, as always, but suffers from a ramp down effective of the last arc and from the unresolved status of Carl. You can never go wrong with this series as every issue offers some level of good entertainment.

Walking Dead Survivors' Guide #2 of 4

Another round of twenty profiles of Walking Dead characters. This issue covers the rest of the letter "C" through much of "H". The importance of this issue is the inclusion of the Governor's profile. If you were ever interested in getting into this series and were looking for a reason (beyond someone else's explanation) then sit down and read the two page profile about the Governor. He is arguably the most interesting character in the entire series. When his actions are condensed down to highlights it seems like it would be difficult to not want to read the series to meet this character and witness his actions. Other than the Governor, the issue includes some of the more important characters like Glenn, Dale and Douglas. Overall it's a very good look at some of the series characters but it is not perfect.

Walking Dead #84

The conclusion of the "No Way Out" arc takes a bit of a different direction than what I had expected with this issue. The cliffhanger from last issue led me to believe this would be a more somber issue with a send-off to a long time character. Perhaps the issue would have some zombie fighting, especially when dealing with the pockets of survivors scattered around the neighborhood. Instead this issue completely goes in the opposite direction as it is almost entirely an action filled issue. It's a good read but I was left a little unsatisfied with the apparent lack of resolution with regard to the previous issue's cliffhanger. Consider this your spoiler warning. All you need to know is that it's a good book, as always, but it is not as great as the previous issue.

I realize this isn't everyone's cup of tea. After all, most people that read comic books like their stories to be a) original and b) a story. This is arguably neither. However, I bought it and was impressed enough that I thought it would be something a lot of people would overlook but ultimately would enjoy the read if they purchased it.

For as long as I can remember this series moves along with steady, terrific stories, issue after issue. Generally, there is a period of time where things seem to be going well for the cast, with some mild drama on the side. Then, when the characters (and the reader) seem the most comfortable, everything goes to Hell and characters - main characters die. This is one of those issues. Part Four of "No Way Out" starts out no different than a lot of issues, but escalates into chaos by the end and leaves the series changed forever. This issue validates sticking with this series through the more "normal" issues because when there is a payoff, like this issue, it's so much more worthwhile.
