Richard Gratton's Fantastic Reads 4 U

Mighty Thor #9
Release Date: 07/27/2016

What a great comic book! There is so much going on in this book and Jason Aaron has the gas pedal pushed to the floor. Russell Dauterman is easily one of the finest artists working in comics today. In order to find a flaw, I would really have to search this issue and nitpick, which I don't want to do. This comic is a fantastic read and nothing should be said to take away from what the creative team is doing here – which is in stark contrast to what was done in the Strongest Viking There Is, two-part storyline.

Richard Gratton's Fantastic Reads 4 U

Mighty Thor #7
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Release Date: 05/25/16

Not everyone is a fan of Jane Foster as the god of thunder, but I am. Jane Foster as Thor is a work of genius that has yet to be fully explored. Her human frailty and more to the point, her battle with cancer – which makes her frailty that much more current and relevant – is diametrically opposed to her identity as Thor. Couple this with the gorgeous art Russell Dauterman has been producing month after month and Jason Aaron's fantastic writing, and Marvel has the makings for magical creativity for the foreseeable future.

So what the hell happened the last two months?

The Mighty Thor #4
Marvel Comics
Aaron, Dauterman & Wilson

"The Mighty Thor" doesn't pull any punches with this installment. While the cliffhanger promises a great comic coming up next, this issue is quite a good one as well. In some ways there are a couple of major plots boiling to a head making this is a very packed comic book. The artwork appears to be outdoing itself each issue as the story builds. This is definitely an issue to check out.

THE MIGHTY THOR #1The Mighty Thor #1
Marvel Comics
Aaron, Dauterman & Wilson

"The Mighty Thor" kicks off with a thirty page, five-dollar comic book that provides a good study of Thor, kicks off a good plot and provides some action. The comic is good at making new readers feel as though they haven't missed anything as the plot is hatched slowly in the comic with relevant exposition to move it along. The comic does leave the location of the other Thor (you know the one from the movies) unknown but he's not missed and the mystery helps to entertain. This is a good start at what looks to be a strong series.

Thors #2Thors #2

Aaron, Sprouse, Sudzuka, Story & Gracia

Thors continues to be a murder mystery, but this issue departs from an investigation as the Thors fall into familiar tropes, such as fighting each other. This is an average read as the investigation tends to bumble into information instead of doing any tangible detective work. The comic has some nice visuals, some funny components and some good action but doesn't add much of a new angle on the Thors Corps. This is an okay read.

The first issue of "Thors" is a crime drama that stays about as far as super-heroes as it can while still including them as the lead characters. This comes as no surprise given that Jason Aaron gained a level of fame scripting the crime-drama, "Scalped." "Thors" is not nearly as gritty or violent as "Scalped" but the book definitely has plenty of drama. This is a slower issue but a very good read for those that enjoy a crime comic book.

Thor Annual #1Thor Annual #1
Marvel Comics
Punk, Stevenson & Aaron

The Thor Annual is one of the best annuals I've read in a while. The comic is what I look for in annual as it sets up things to come and celebrates the character(s) that typically occupy the title. The comic features a story from all three timelines that the main title has featured for the past couple of years. The book is set at the inflated price of $5, which is unfortunate because the book just doesn't justify the price point in terms of page count or continuity relevance. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book tremendously.
