The Strange Talent Of Luther Strode #5The Strange Talent Of Luther Strode #5 of 6

Luther Strode races towards its conclusion with what appears to be the most violent and bloody issue to date. For the most part, this story still leaves a lot that is yet to be revealed but the individual issue is straight forward enough that the unanswered questions really don't matter or factor into the story. Once again the art nearly steals the show, particularly when the gore comes into play. I am enjoying this series as I find this to be a refreshing look at violence in a way that I don't believe I have seen since something like Kick-Ass. If you aren't too squeamish then I recommend picking this issue up.

Luther Strode hits the middle of the arc with an issue that takes a bit of breather from the pace that was set with the first two issues. It’s still a very good read, but as a single issue it certainly feels like the set-up is under way for the big finish. The key element to this issue is that of Luther becoming a hero. Or at least what he thinks a hero should be. It’s good stuff but I was also hoping for a little bit more of the raunchy art that we had seen in the previous two issues. This is shaping up to be a very memorable mini-series, one that I hope will have a sequel.

I am always on the lookout for that book that brings something new. Whether it be a bizarre story angle, a hefty serving of violence that shows death in ways that I hadn't thought of, a zombie story about people doing bad things to other people or about a cop who eats body parts at a crime scene to learn what's happened. Chew, Kick-Ass, Existence 2.0 and Walking Dead come to mind in recent years. Luther Strode is approaching that status. Oh sure there have been tons of books that deal with ordinary teenaged nerds getting super powers and not knowing how to control themselves. However, it isn't the hook of the story that I find different but the execution. Luther is filled with an uncontrollable rage, even if just a hallucination at times, but it's the creativity in the presentation of the violence that helps this to be so unique.

The first issue of the Luther Strode mini-series doesn't hide what the book is going to be known as: violent. Violence in comic books is tricky because any book that focuses on violence has the potential to have the feeling that's been done before. However, this book feels fresh. I am not claiming that the story doesn't feel like I've read it before but the look and the vibe of the book feels new and is executing in an entertaining way. I enjoyed this book and plan to stick with the mini-series.
