"Ms Marvel" starts off with a thirty-page, five-dollar comic book. The comic is a slow read for a first issue and definitely struggles to continue where the previous series left off without alienating new or seasoned readers. The comic doesn't have a ton of action and doesn't focus much on the main character but rather on one of her supporting characters. I enjoyed the artwork but there wasn't much for the art to showcase. This was an okay start to the series but I think it caters to the readers from the previous run too much and ignores that this is a "first" issue.

At Marvel Comics, the introduction of new characters is generally reserved for the Ultimate Universe. However, the re-launch of Ms Marvel is also the introduction of a brand new character, Kamala Khan. This isn't Bucky or Falcon becoming Captain America , this is a totally new character taking the role of a long established one. The gimmick to get some mainstream news is that she is a Muslim. While that might draw some extra attention to the book and gain some new readers it won't help unless the contents of the book are good. Thankfully, the contents stand on their own merits and make this comic book a genuine success solely based on the creator's work. Whether you are a fan or not of the character, the gimmick or anything in between this is a comic book to pick up.

Two issues into the re-launch of Ms. Marvel and it appears Marvel has a hit on their hands. There isn't anything complicated in this issue and the overarching plot isn't really even touched upon, it's simply old-fashioned character building at its best. Sure, the book seems to follow in the classic footsteps of the likes of Spider-Man but it's done with freshness, class and style. It's a great book so far.

The first issue of Ms Marvel is definitely a classic, world-building, origin, first issue. While the general story is one you've probably seen or read a hundred times over, this issue executes in a nice enough way to grab the reader's attention and hopefully provide the reader with enough to return for a second issue. The issue isn't perfect as there are some questions, specifically about the ending that might confuse readers, but overall this is a charming and fun first issue.
