Criminal Special Edition #1Savage Sword of Criminal #1 One-Shot

Brubaker & Phillips

Years ago Brubaker and Phillips published a series of stories set in a shared universe that dealt with the criminal underworld. The comics all flew under the "Criminal" title and were published over at Icon (Marvel). Criminal returns for a one-shot that is simply one of the best comics I've read. You need no prior knowledge of the previous works nor do you need to do any homework before reading this. All you will get for $5 is entertainment across forty pages at the highest level.

Bitch Planet takes a break from the first arc to focus on one of the supporting characters, Penny. The comic provides a nice origin story for her and sets up some of the mindset of the character as well as the inner workings of the "Fathers" and how someone gets locked up in the prison. The comic is an entertaining read and provides some excellent visuals to compliment the story. It's worth a look.

The eleventh issue of Deadly Class is the kind of issue that is all-out action that brings plot heads to a boil. The book stops short of being a complete game-changer as things end with a cliffhanger that kind of took the spotlight away from the issue's main contents. However, you cut it up, the comic is extremely violent and very entertaining. I recommend checking this out.

Walking Dead delivers another compelling, if not suspenseful read. It also is a slightly uncomfortable read. The comic book stays focused on the drama within the community as opposed to the regular threats of zombies or outsiders looking to harm the primary group. The comic is nicely paced and definitely provides a ton of entertainment. You may not find the material the most appropriate, but what else do you expect from this comic book?

Morrison, Burnham & Fairbairn

Nameless is a horror comic book. Morrison doesn't give a lot away in this issue but he also doesn't make the reader work too hard for the plot either. The book is backed up with fantastic artwork and that helps the story along because it is downright strange in parts. This isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea but it is something to give a shot.

Geek Goggle Reviews: The Dying And The Dead #1

The Dying And The Dead #1The Dying and The Dead #1
Image Comics
Hickman & Bodenheim

The Dying and The Dead is a hefty first issue that will give readers enough to decide whether the story intrigues them or not. Basically, the beginning of the comic book establishes a mysterious box that is important enough to spring up a massive murder scene at a wedding. The comic then takes a complete turn as it unwinds a story about a man looking to extend his dying wife's life by making a deal with devil essentially. The comic clocks in at fifty plus pages of story for the price of $4.50. This alone makes it a terrific bargain. DC, Marvel, IDW and others would happily charge $8 or $9 bucks for this comic. I urge everyone to at least give this a look through.

Bitch Planet churns out another entertaining read with the second issue. This comic book brings out some of the larger plot elements at play as well as continuing to establish the prison story lines. After the previous issue it didn't appear that any single character was going to pop out soon as the protagonist but this issue proves otherwise. The visuals are the real treat of the comic book as there are two scenes in particular that are unique and very effective at showing and not telling. This is a series to pick up.

Symons, Stockman & Little

The latest fantasy launch from Image is a premise that you probably have seen a number of times before. The comic sets up two lead characters and how they came to meet. Unsure of whether the two characters will end up a pair or not, a situation arises where they are forced together. The comic book is nice to look at and has some ideas in here but has an average opening issue and some odd execution. You may want to check this out but I wasn't blown away by what I read.
