"Faster Than Light" is a science-fiction, horror comic book that presents a slow first issue. The comic book takes a lot of time to introduce the characters, their problem and the embarking of the adventure. The book has some nice visuals that help the story along. The series shows some promise but will need to pick up the pace in the coming issues.

Jeff Lemire's latest launch is a story about a bunch of kids that stumble into a murder mystery. The comic book focuses on establishing the four characters and revealing the mystery. The comic is fairly ordinary and teases a bigger story. However, as far as first issues go "Plutona" is an average first issue offering. If you are fans of the creators then you in for the long haul, but I'm not sure the casual reader will find a ton in here to hook them. This is worth watching.

Every so often I find a comic book that I describe as a punch in the gut. Usually they turn out to be terrific, but difficult reads. "Big Man Plans" is a four-issue mini-series that is one of the more unique punches in the gut I've ever read. This is not a comic book for everyone. It contains graphic content, violence and deals in some very heavy themes. However, if like your comics to get your blood pumping a little faster then this is for you. If you pick this book up I think you are going to end up loving it, but also feeling drained upon completing it. I highly recommend this mini-series.

"Invisible Republic" recently completed its opening arc and manages to tell two simultaneous tales. The comic book is turning into a very slow burn of a story, which contradicts the pace of the opening issue. However, the comic book is bringing together a number of good ideas and telling an entertaining story in the process. The artwork is one of the true highlights of the opening arc as it brings a very dark, but detailed tone to the story. This is the kind of comic book that when it takes it off you will be happy you joined in on the ground floor. This arc is one to pick up.

"Spread" is a no holds barred horror comic book that takes a very bloody look at the apocalypse. Make no mistake, this comic book is not for the feint of heart. For the most part, the story follows three characters through a very limited set of scenery changes while being chased by some of the most grotesque and creative monsters this side of a John Carpenter movie. The series just began its second arc with the eighth issue last month so now is a good time to check this comic book out.

"The Walking Dead" does something this issue that is hasn't done in a long time: it sticks with one set of characters for an entire issue. After the shocking deaths that were discovered at the end of the previous issue, this issue is spent with Rick, Andre and Michonne dealing with the aftermath. The book is packed with drama and definitely hits all the correct angles to the arguments of what to do next. This is a very solid issue from this series and shows how strong characters can drive a good comic book. This is one to pick up.

The second issue of "We Stand On Guard" isn't quite as pulse-pounding as the first issue but is a very good read. The comic book gives the reader a little bit of what life is like for the Canadian citizen while being occupied by the Americans. It also gives some insight into how the freedom fighting group, the Two-Four, operate and it continues the mistrust theme for the lead character, Amber. The artwork continues to be a true highlight for the comic as there are a number of pages where the artwork completely exceeds any reasonable expectations for artwork in a comic book. This is a good read and is definitely worth picking up.

"This Damned Band" is a comic about a 1970s rock band that is participating in a documentary. The reader witnesses the difference between real-life for the band and the life they portray when it is time to be 'in character.' The comic book takes an interesting turn after the band trips on some mushrooms. The comic book is a good one because of the ideas within and contains good artwork, but unfortunately, doesn't do much to engage the reader with its characters. The comic is worth checking out but doesn't leave much of a lasting impression.
