The second issue of Southern Bastards is as strong an issue as the first, if not stronger. When you break the issue down there isn't much that happens in it. Basically, Earl Tubb comes to the crossroads a couple of times and it seems that each time he gets himself pulled deeper and deeper into staying at his backwards hometown. The issue is brilliantly executed and illustrated to perfection to make this comic have as big an impact as possible. This is a must read.

Millar & Fegredo

The latest Mark Millar launch pairs him with artist Duncan Fegredo and is another tale involving a super powered person in the real world. This type of concept has been done to death but Millar is holding his cards close to the chest in the opening issue. He lays the ground work with a slow build up that reveals the nature of the powers. It's an okay issue. It doesn't contain a lot of the shocks that a Mark Millar book might normally include, but that isn't really a good or bad thing. If you are curious then I recommend picking this up, it might just hit the right notes with you.

A true, new beginning is what this issue advertises and delivers on. If you ever were curious about this series but intimated about getting the back story, then this is literally the jump on point where none of what has come before matters all that much. Kirkman zooms the timeline ahead two full years after the events of the big storyline, "All Out War." The result is a good read that introduces brand new characters and re-introduces some familiar ones. This is your double-sized, three dollar, tailor-made, jump on point. Take advantage of it.

Aaron & Latour

Jason Aaron knows how to launch a creator owned book. This series seems near and dear to his heart as both he and Latour were raised in the south. The opening issue presents a fair number of grizzled and hardened characters along with an eye-opening plot to grab the reader's attention. I definitely recommend checking this book out.

The end to the twelve-part "All Out War" storyline comes down to Rick versus Negan in throw-down that ends with a surprise ending. The thrilling one-on-one fight can't shield the many problems with the comic book and the storyline though. While the comic reads as an entertaining read the sloppiness of the storytelling leaves this comic in the "average" zone for the Walking Dead as a series. Kirkman promises big things for the next issue so we'll have to wait and see.

"All Out War" is in its endgame with this penultimate chapter of the twelve part series. This particular issue is a good one because Rick and Negan square off in a heated confrontation. The book has a nice pace to it and gives the reader a nice punch in the stomach to end the book. It's a good, solid read and it seems like the unexpected is about to happen in the finale.

Millar & Parlov

The second issue of Starlight doesn't quite capture the Flash Gordon-like story as the first issue did. Instead this comic is more about convincing the old man to dust off his suit and return for one more adventure. This type of exchange where one tries to plead their case to another, first with praise and then with guilt, is something seen time and time again and this comic doesn't do much different with the idea. Still, the comic has some high points, especially at the end. This is a pretty good comic book.

The tenth part of "All Out War" is a fast moving read. The action is fairly limited considering where things left off last issue and the book sort moves to the next phase with little hype. It's a good issue for a variety of reasons but isn't perfect because it just feels like it's a roadblock to what comes next rather than an issue with its own drama and tale to be told. If anything, the book is always surprising and there are one or two of those in here. This is recommending reading.
