Green Lantern Corps #48
DC Comics
Bedard, Syaf & Cifuentes
Green Lantern Corps enters a new era with this issue. Not so much in terms of what occurs in the issue, but with the new creative team. This is a title that has been anchored with basically one team for about three years and has seen the title stand on its own through two major crossovers. Now the reins are passed. Rather than trying to make the title their own with some sort of shocking turn of events or radical use of the characters, the title has a safe but enjoyable deployment. While not Earth-shattering the title moves quickly and keeps juggling the large cast we are accustomed to seeing. It’s a good opening issue to the arc and a very nice first step for the new creators.

Green Lantern Corps #46
DC Comics
Tomasi, Gleason & Buchman
Green Lantern Corps wraps up its involvement in Blackest Night this issue with a thirty page, four dollar comic book. On the surface the comic provides a lot of action and a massive display of artwork between amazingly detailed penciling and some precise and bright coloring. However, the issue is a microcosm of what the event has become over the last few months. It's apparent there isn't enough story to fill out the duration of the event and even the strongest title, Green Lantern Corps, is spinning its wheels here at the end. This was a terribly disappointing issue.

Green Lantern Corps #45
DC Comics
Tomasi, Gleason, Buchman & Champagne
Green Lantern Corps takes a breather from Blackest Night in order to get Guy Gardner's red ring off of his hand in this issue. It's now very clear to me that the Blackest Night storyline has been stretched out much longer than it should have been as this is the last of the three core Blackest Night titles to throw out a filler issue in the middle of the big crossover. It's not to say it's a bad issue at all, but it's a story that could have occurred anywhere else in the post-Sinestro Corps War universe. It's a fine issue but it does pull out a couple of anti-climatic moments to solve some of the plot. It's not a great issue but it is a competent one.

Green Lantern Corps #41
DC Comics
Tomasi, Gleason & Buchman
This comic takes the concept of the Black Lanterns fighting the good guys to levels that exceed even the Blackest Night mini series. What we have here is a huge number of the regular cast in this comic book getting their worst fears thrown in their face. It works well in the long term because these are characters that have had time to develop over the course of this series so the build up has been gradual only to have their emotions crash in this issue. The issue has a payoff in the short term because the backdrop of the entire issue is a huge battle on Oa. The issue moves quickly but doesn’t cheat the reader in the story department or in the art department. Having followed this series for a number of years I can’t imagine any long time fan reading this issue and feeling disappointed.

Green Lantern #42
DC Comics
Johns, Tan, Barrows, Glapion & Jose
The orange lantern is dealt with in this issue. This comic had such a mixture it was tough to be fully happy with it. For the most part, the comic simply has Hal Jordan against Larfleeze. Hal wants to stop Larfleeze from doing whatever evil he feels like doing while Larfleeze wants Hal’s blue ring. The comic adds in a little other plot elements here and there to set up as much as possible for the Blackest Night storyline coming up next month. It’s a good issue but it isn’t anything close to great.

Green Lantern Corps #37
DC Comics

Green Lantern Corps hits a lot of plots in this issue. It’s another solid effort as it juggles a bunch of threads, some from this title and others from the parent Green Lantern title. The comic has some good battle scenes and some nice character development. There were a couple of odd points in the book, but for the most part the comic is a winner.

Month in and month out this title gives you some bang for your buck. It has multiple plot threads running all over the place, it has some good action and it’s loaded with dialogue and character development through interaction. It’s not the kind of comic you read in three minutes like Hulk. This one, you sit down and go through to understand some of the symbolism and to study the art looking for clues. The only catch is that you have to be into the story. Luckily I am. For those who may want to jump on….well….that might be tough.
