"Faster Than Light" is a science-fiction, horror comic book that presents a slow first issue. The comic book takes a lot of time to introduce the characters, their problem and the embarking of the adventure. The book has some nice visuals that help the story along. The series shows some promise but will need to pick up the pace in the coming issues.

The latest Star Wars launch could have easily been titled, "Return of the Jedi Aftermath." This comic book picks up the action in the final moments of the second Death Star and continues through the celebration at the Ewok village and then launches into the next crisis. This is exactly the kind of comic book that the fans of the original trilogy have been looking for in preparation of the new film. This comic actually answers some questions about the film and brings in a new group of characters to follow once the film's heroes pass the ball. This is definitely a comic book to pick up.

The latest issue of "Batman" is a departure from the sprawling narrative that Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are putting together. This issue is a thirty-page, one-shot, co-written by Brian Azzarello, entitled, "A Simple Case." On the surface the comic book is a very strong offering. It returns Batman to the man-on-the-street criminal investigator as he looks into a fifteen year old's death that seems to be the result of a some important criminals. The comic book could have been a great read if not for some editorial choices and some heavy-handed attempts at jamming real life's social hot-button topics into a comic book. Generally, this is an entertaining enough read that will set you back five bucks in the process.

The brief mini-series wraps up with another charming look at the relationship between Peter and Kitty. Really, this mini-series serves as a vehicle for Peter to mourn the old Kitty and it serves as a way to bridge the old relationship to something new. The plot in the comic is very much off to the side and that works for this kind of story. If you have any interest in the two characters then this is a good read.

This is a great comic book. I read the comic three times looking for something that would stand out as a flaw and didn't find one. The comic book is a humor book but it tells the reader all they could ever want about the lead character and it brings in a very strong supporting cast while telling a simple, but entertaining story around a basic plot. This is a great comic book to pick up whether you are a fan of Groot, Guardians or just good comic book fun.

Jeff Lemire's latest launch is a story about a bunch of kids that stumble into a murder mystery. The comic book focuses on establishing the four characters and revealing the mystery. The comic is fairly ordinary and teases a bigger story. However, as far as first issues go "Plutona" is an average first issue offering. If you are fans of the creators then you in for the long haul, but I'm not sure the casual reader will find a ton in here to hook them. This is worth watching.

"Future Imperfect" wraps up its five issue mini-series with a hard hitting installment. The premise of the book has had an underlying tone that the plot to kill off Doom couldn't possibly ever get anywhere. After all, "Secret Wars" is slated to go through the end of the year at a minimum. However, this issue puts Doom in harm's way as he battles the Maestro. This comic definitely caters to the fans of the twenty-year old, original, "Future Imperfect" story, but this issue seems to be aimed at "Secret Wars" readers specifically. I enjoyed the book and the mini-series and recommend checking it out.

"Man vs Rock" is a comic book that is sure to make you laugh, possibly roll your eyes, but definitely entertain you in the process. The first issue is mostly set up to the big showdown between man and rocks. That's correct: man fighting rocks. Not aliens from outer space, Russians or zombies but rocks that have coexisted on Earth with mankind for millions of years. This comic is definitely one to track down on comixology or at their site: manvsrock.ecrater.com. I recommend giving this comic book a try. You won't regret picking it up.
