Batman Gazette Batman Dead REVIEW

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Batman Gazette Batman Dead
DC Comics
Nicieza, Nguyen, March, Chriscross, McKelvie, Konat & McKenna

This issue begins the Battle for the Cowl or at least comics with the Battle for the Cowl banner on them. This issue really is a bit of a preview issue involving some fringe characters in Gotham. In some ways, you can see the direct connections to some of the coming series, like Azrael. The issue is pretty good but we won’t really know how good it is until we see these characters rooted in the event. At this point it’s probably for the completists for the event only.

The Mighty #1 And #2 REVIEW

March 7th, 2009 7:40am by ComicList Email

Suspended Animation Review

The Mighty, #’s 1 and 2, published by DC Comics, 32 pages, $2.99 each.

What if Superman, besides being a well-known superhero, was also a merchandising institution? (In his world, not ours.) And, what if, from toy lines, comic books, clothing lines, video games, etc., he funded his own national law-enforcement agency? Well, wonder no more, because that’s the premise in DC Comics’ The Mighty.

Green Lantern #38 REVIEW

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Green Lantern #38
DC Comics
Johns, Reis & Albert

This issue wraps up the introduction of the red lanterns arc. It’s got some good action and some good character interaction between Hal, Sinestro, Atrocitus and the blue lanterns. The issue drags a little bit when it switches over to Carol Ferris. The comic has a back up that looks into the future of Blackest Night. For the most part it’s a good comic but its light on the page count for the core of the issue. You really only get ten pages of the rage of the red lanterns story arc which is a bit of a disappointment for a finale of an arc.

Superman #685 REVIEW

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Superman #685
DC Comics
Robinson & Pina

Superman says goodbye to Earth. Mon-El escapes the Phantom Zone. The people that interact with Superman on Earth are left to carry on without him. This issue reads very much like a preview issue for the coming months of the Superman books. It’s an okay issue but it lacks in substance when dealing with the major events it breezes past in this issue. I can’t help but feel this issue was filler and could have been folded into either the previous issue of Superman or of Action Comics or fleshed out into its own arc.

X-Files #4 REVIEW

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

The X-Files #4 of 6
Wildstorm Comics (DC Comics)
Wolfman & Denham

The two-part arc wraps up with a little mystery and lot of noise. While this series, in print and on screen, usually ends with some intrigue and a little bit of a brain stumper, this one uses some good, old-fashioned shooting. It’s still a good read but it clearly falls on the action side of the fence, which threw me for a loop.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Weekly Rankings For 02/18/09

Here are this week’s comics ranked prior to reading them:

5. Uncanny X-Men #506
4. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic #38
3. The X-Files #4 of 6
2. Highlander Origins: The Kurgan #2 of 2
1. X-Men Legacy #221

My LCS didn’t get their IDW comics so I am unable to read and review GI Joe Origins or Transformers Maximum Dinobots. It’s not clear if they will be in next week but I suspect they wont be. This week was close in the order but not nearly as good as last week’s comics.

Here are the rankings after the first read through with a mini-review:

Green Lantern #37 REVIEW

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Green Lantern #37
DC Comics
Johns, Reis & Albert

Just when you thought you knew Hal Jordan, he goes and does something completely off the radar. This issue may be tagged “Rage of the Red Lanterns” with a “Faces of Evil” banner as well, but this issue is very much about Hal Jordan and his demons coming back to bite him. The issue plays very well with the spectrum of colors and corps. There is some fighting and a good hook at the end to keep the suspense high. This was a very good comic.
