Cable #13

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Cable #13
Marvel Comics
Swierczynski & Olivetti

The second chapter of the Messiah War has an awful lot of Deadpool. He was revealed to be alive in the future and an apparent ally to Cable and X-Force. Well, in this issue you get know him very, very well. I’m not sure I would have devoted this much time to Deadpool in a crossover that doesn’t involve his title, but it was fairly entertaining nonetheless.

Cable #12
Marvel Comics
Swierczynski, McKelvie, Guru eFX & Olivetti

Another issue that grows the Hope character out. Cable plays a smaller role here. The issue is last before the big crossover with X-Force. It feels like filler. That isn’t to say that is filler but it feels that way because the environment that Hope and Cable occupy here is very desolate and it makes for a boring story at times.

Cable #11
Marvel Comics
Swiervznski, McKelvie, Guru eFX & Olivetti

Cable and the Messiah child, Hope, continue their fight to survive somewhere in the future. This issue may be the weakest in the series. For the most part, there is little action and the comic centers around the pair trying to find a habitable place to live. Between Cable’s broken time machine and his reduced mutant powers their options are limited. The comic has some interesting interaction between the two, but because the kid is aging so quickly it’s hard to see real development. The switch in artists in the middle of the story is jarring. For the most part, this issue feels like it’s a filler issue waiting for the crossover with X-Force.

Cable #10
Marvel Comics
Swierczynski & Olivetti

Two stories take different directions in this issue. The issue somehow gives a realistic conclusion to the bizarre future timeline story, but a very unnatural ending to the current timeline storyline. All in all it’s a good read with some nice drama and a little cat and mouse game thrown in to be consistent with previous issues.

Cable #9
Marvel Comics
Swierczynski & Olivetti

Cable prepares the messiah child to fight, but while in the middle of a battle. Meanwhile, Bishop gets real nasty and shows his ugly side. It’s a good issue with some interesting twists at the end. It’s a comic that does a good job of building up the character of Cable and deconstructing Bishop into a believable villain.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Weekly Rankings For 12/04/08

Here are this week’s comics ranked prior to reading them:

5. Hulk Family Green Genes #1
4. Wolverine: Manifest Destiny #2 of 4
3. Secret Invasion #8 of 8
2. Cable #9
1. Batman #682

I also picked up Astounding Wolf-Man, but can’t give it a fair review until I’ve read a little primer in issue #9 and the Image Monster Pile-Up. I passed on Hellboy mostly because I missed the Darkness arc and I passed on the Iron-Man, Hulk and Nick Fury one shot.

Here are the rankings after the first read through with a mini-review:
