This week's edition of Batman Eternal turns its attention to a new subplot that involves Batwing. This issue gives a tiny nod to the larger plot that was hatched in the first four issues, but for the most part this comic turns the book into an entirely unrelated direction. When these threads begin to come together the payoff will probably be big, but issue to issue it's tough to take these shifts in story and this particular issue is very average with not a lot to match the hype of this title.

Batman Eternal takes an odd turn this week as the book's focus is nearly entirely on the character Red Robin aka Tim Drake. Much of the plot lines explored in the first four issues see little to no traction in this issue as the series branches off on a subplot from one of the early issues. The weekly Batman book rolls on with a very solid issue. This particular issue pushes the plot forward on multiple fronts and it ups the stakes for Gotham in the process. The book definitely reads, at times, like an Insider Batman comic book as there appears to be little nuggets here and there meant to please the long-time, die-hard Batman fans. However, you slice it, this book is moving along at a nice pace for a weekly book and appears to be a winner. I question whether a new reader could jump on to this issue, with it only being issue three that is definitely a downside. This is a good read though.

Batman Eternal pushes the story from the opening issue forward in a couple of interesting directions. The comic veers away from much of what was introduced in the first issue, such as the appearance of Jason Bard, but the comic brings out some other new characters to the storyline to keep things interesting. At this point, the book is an entertaining read but it doesn't distinguish itself from any of the thousands of Batman stories that have preceded it.
