The Comixalaxy Reviews: THE FLASH REBIRTH #1

The Flash: Rebirth #1
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Pencils: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colors: Wan Plascencia
Letters: Steve Wands
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: 06/08/16

Given the fact that DCU Rebirth #1 was essentially a Wally West Flash story, it makes perfect sense that writer Joshua Williamson's The Flash: Rebirth #1 would heavily tie into it and be its true sequel. That idea itself feels right given that it's the Barry Allen story Flashpoint that started DC's New 52 Universe and making a statement that the Flash is one of the most important characters within the DC timeline is no surprise when Geoff Johns is involved.

Green Lanterns: Rebirth #1
Writer: Geoff Johns & Sam Humphries
Pencils: Ethan Van Sciver & Ed Benes
Colors: Jason Wright
Letters: Travis Lanham
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: 06/01/16

DC Rebirth is in full swing this month and the first wave of issues has just come out this week. One of the more anticipated titles is Green Lanterns which will follow the two newest members of the corps, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. As someone who isn't as familiar to the Green Lantern mythos as he'd like to be but is looking for a good jumping on point for the current monthly's, I was hoping that Green Lanterns Rebirth #1 would be a nice place to start. As is one of the primary purposes of Rebirth. Does it succeed?

Civil War II #1
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils: David Marquez
Colors: Justin Ponsor
Letters: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Release Date: 06/01/16

Marvel's 2006's Civil War, written by Mark Millar is one of the most praised and influentially comic book events of the 21st century. It's the comic which created the cinematic vibe that the industry has today. People call it the comic book that'll gravitate everyday non-comic readers to the medium.

Captain America: Steve Rogers #1
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Release Date: 05/25/16
Note: This review will reveal spoilers as it's necessary in order to properly discuss.

For nearly 2 years now, the mantel of Captain America has been held by Sam Wilson, formally known as Falcon. He took up the challenge after Steve Rogers' super-soldier serum had worn off and his old age had finally started to show. This isn't the first time someone else held the iconic shield. In 2007 Steve Rogers was assassinated by the villain Crossbones in the story "The Death of Captain America", written by Ed Brubaker. Yes, Steve Rogers died in his own titled series and not in the Civil War event by Mark Millar. Due to these events, Bucky Barnes the Winter Soldier assumed the role until the Steve Rogers' inevitable return in "Captain America Reborn". But that's enough digressing for now, on to this issue which opinions on it exploded on social media.

Legends of Oz: Tik-Tok and the Kalidah #2
Publisher: Aspen Comics
Release Date: 06/01/16

Tik-Tok is a world of Oz robot and Kali is a Grizzly bear with a tiger's head. While being hunted down by flying demon-like monkeys (?), this unlikely pair are frantically bringing an as yet unnamed girl to the city to hand her over for apparent execution. Aspen comics generally have a lot going for them, especially art, and Legends of Oz: Tik-Tok and the Kalidah #2 is no exception. The art in this issue is solid, dynamic, and inviting – it draws us in to a world we may be familiar from the L. Frank Baum classics, and yet is unique to the Aspen world of storytelling. The story, though interesting and captivating, falls a little bit short, simply because writer Keith Thomas fails to capitalize on some great storytelling opportunities; he has really cool characters, but fails to make use of them.

Joyride #2
Publisher: Boom Studios
Release Date: 05/25/16

After an incredibly strong start and seamlessly positive reviews, Boom Studios announced that Joyride will be turning into an ongoing series. I for one was overcome with joy because even though I had a blast reading the first installment, I felt there was so much potential for future story, character development, and theme analysis presented in that debut issue that a 4 chapter mini-series couldn't do it justice.
