Eric Bradach's The Comixalaxy

Scarlet Witch #9
Writer: James Robinson
Artist: Joelle Jones
Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letterer: Cory Petit
Cover: David Aja
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: 08/10/2016

This has been one of my personal favorite series to come out of Marvel post Secret Wars (2015). Writer James Robinson has really allowed these one shot stories to focus on Wanda as a person, developed her and progressed her into an assertive woman. And that assertiveness comes into satisfying fruition in this issue.

Colorist: Nolan Woodard
Letterer: Cory Petit

Release Date: 08/10/2016

After the meaningless Apocalypse Wars crossover where a completely missed opportunity to develop Evan, Kid Apocalypse, All-New X-Men gets back to what the opening arc promised us. Focusing on the relationships between this team of young mutants, developing the characters, allowing them to grow, and having fun. In the spirit of the New X-Men Academy X and Wolverine and the X-Men series. Writer Dennis Hopeless tries to turn the attention back to building the team dynamic, putting Laura Kinney (X-23/Wolverine) and her relationship with Warren Worthington (Angel) in the spotlight. However, this book demonstrates how when a character whose in two different series simultaneously can cause inconsistencies.

Invincible Iron Man #12
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Mike Deodato
Colorist: Frank Martin
Letters: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: 08/03/2016

In the shadows of event comics, it can sometimes become easy to overlook and forget about the current ongoing series of the crossover's main protagonists/antagonists. As is the case with Marvel's Civil War II and the flagship title of one of its central characters, the Invincible Iron Man.

The Comixalaxy Reviews: ALL-STAR BATMAN #1

Eric Bradach's The Comixalaxy

All-Star Batman #1
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: John Romita Jr. & Declan Shalvey
Colorist: Dean White & Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Steve Wands
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: 08/10/2016

After the events of Flashpoint in 2011, DC Comics rebooted their superhero universe, much to the chagrin DC readers, and released the New 52. No one can question its success and the onslaught of new #1's on the shelves sold like gangbusters. However, don't confuse high sales for satisfying reception from fans, as the majority of fans seemed to dislike or even hate the New 52. The change-up of continuity, character reinterpretations, and disappearance of fan-favorites, i.e. Wally West, had some people fueled with rage. From Scott Lobdell's Red Hood and the Outlaws, with its over sexualized portrayal of Starfire, to Cameron Stewart's hipster Barbra Gordon.

Kill or be Killed #1

Artist: Sean Phillips

The celebrated collaborative team-up of writer Ed Brubaker(Captain America, Daredevil) and artist Sean Phillips(Hellblazer, Marvel Zombies), have united once again to create a new thriller comic, Kill or be Killed. Much like their previous works together, i.e. Criminal and Fatale, Kill or be Killed is full of intense violence, surrounded in an atmosphere of grim and somber grit.

The Comixalaxy Reviews: DOCTOR STRANGE #10

Eric Bradach's The Comixalaxy

Doctor Strange #10
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Chris Bachalo
Colors: Chris Bachalo & Rain Beredo
Letters: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: 08/03/2016

The Marvel business model at the moment is obsessed with re-launches and the fixation on releasing new #1's on the racks to boost sales. Every time DC seems to be edging them out on the top 10 charts, they react with an event with an endless amount of tie-ins, and readers are understandably becoming tired and frustrated of the current climate. With each event there is the promise of a shake-up in the status-quo that goes unfulfilled. From 2008's Secret Invasion, that came with the tagline "embrace change", to the recent Secret Wars(2015) where we got the All New All Different imprint.

One of the most daunting tasks when it comes to reading comics is the simple act of starting, particularly where to start. Many of these characters have been around for over half a century with a rich history. Fortunately, many of them have a straight forward origin that are well-known amongst the general public. Not only that, aside from a few tweaks, they've largely stayed the same. Marc Spector, the street fighting Moon Knight however has had a gallery of different origins and takes on the character's tone that beginning to read, let alone write the character, and understand his complex background is a challenge that can turn people off. Writer Jeff Lemire has taken that and flipped it on its head, as he's used that to create a stellar psychological thriller, mystery, horror story.

The Comixalaxy Reviews: OLD MAN LOGAN #9

July 30th, 2016 6:53pm by ComicList Email

Eric Bradach's The Comixalaxy

Old Man Logan #9
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Andrea Sorrentino
Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo
Letters: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: 07/27/2016

Writer Jeff Lemire's Old Man Logan is arguably the strongest of the current ongoing X-Men books. Thankfully it hasn't diverted itself into either of the tiresome "Civil War II" or "Apocalypse Wars" events/crossovers, and by being allowed to tell its own story, its created one hell of book. In the previous issue, Lemire detracted from the ongoing story to bring a very character driven issue. In which he built upon the Logan and young Jean Grey relationship, as well as executing some fantastic, genuine moments with some old friends, including Jubilee, Steve Rogers, Clint Barton, and Puck. Issue nine brings the narrative back to course with the start of a new story arc, "The Last Ronin".
