Secret Avengers #1 (Marko Djurdjevic Variant Cover Edition)Secret Avengers #1
Marvel Comics
Brubaker, Deodato & Beredo

With the Heroic Age in full affect in the Marvel Universe there has come a bevy of new Avengers books. This one has the hook that it is led by Steve Rogers. Steve Rogers, not as Captain America but as something a bit darker that operates on the fringes. This book basically picks up the vibe that we saw in the initial issues of Brubaker's Captain America. It has a black ops feel to it, but the difference is that Rogers is pulling the strings of his team of operatives rather than doing all of the leg work himself. It's a good issue for introducing the team and tying in a plot.

The sequel to Existence wraps up this issue with even more twists and shocks than the first series. This issue brings together a throng of characters as the comic book moves quickly through many acts of deception and mini-cliffhangers as it jumps from scene to scene. It's a very good comic book and a good story overall. The only thing about this issue that makes it less than the original series is the fact that there is so much happening that it almost leaves you with the feeling of exhaustion after reading it rather than shock. I liked the series and I hope there is more of it in the future as things are certainly left open at the end.

Muppet Show #6Muppet Show #6
Boom! Kids Comics
Langridge, Mebberson, Cobain & Bennett

The latest Muppet Show comic book uses the theme of adoption and/or foster care to wrap the stories of the issue together. The idea is more heartfelt than the usual slapstick type themes but there generally is a certain sweetness to these issues and this one is no different. Robin, Kermit's nephew, is feeling unwanted and gets some advice from Scooter's sister to live life on the run. This is fueled because a mysterious older woman is hanging around the theater and the paranoid thought is she is there from an orphanage to collect Robin. It's a good issue but doesn't quite hit the funny bone as all of the previous ones have.

Scratch9 is an all ages comic book that manages to entertain and intrigue a reader of any age with a couple of sweet characters, some well timed humor and a nice gimmick to hook the reader in. The basic premise is a little girl has a cat named Scratch that gets out of the house one day and finds himself in the hands of a sinister scientist. He's turned into a cat that has nine personas to call on depending on the situation. It's a fast moving comic book that I found to be a refreshing read. One that I could read with my kids and get a reaction from or read alone and still get full entertainment value from. This is a good start to a mini series.

Green Lantern Corps #48Green Lantern Corps #48
DC Comics
Bedard, Syaf & Cifuentes

Green Lantern Corps enters a new era with this issue. Not so much in terms of what occurs in the issue, but with the new creative team. This is a title that has been anchored with basically one team for about three years and has seen the title stand on its own through two major crossovers. Now the reins are passed. Rather than trying to make the title their own with some sort of shocking turn of events or radical use of the characters, the title has a safe but enjoyable deployment. While not Earth-shattering the title moves quickly and keeps juggling the large cast we are accustomed to seeing. It’s a good opening issue to the arc and a very nice first step for the new creators.
