The Muppets turn in another fun and exciting performance in the second part of their Snow White adaptation. The bulk of this issue is the introduction of the Seven Dwarfs also known as Electric Mayhew. The issue contains a lot of what makes these Muppet comics so much fun to read. They have popular culture references, snappy dialogue and they move quickly from character to character and joke to joke. This is another very solid read.

At long last some sense can be made of World War Hulks and the Red She-Hulk. This issue basically gives the origin of the Red She-Hulk and unwinds much of the conspiracy that has been hovering over Bruce Banner and all of the other characters in the Hulk universe since the conclusion of World War Hulk some two and a half years ago. There's a lot at the end of the comic that I won't spoil that elevates this to a higher level. You'll just have to trust me on this.

Second Coming rolls on with Chapter Ten this week. The issue doesn't really move along any plot as it focuses on moving pieces into place for the big finish. If this sounds familiar it should because it seems like the previous issue did the exact same thing. One of the main criticisms I have with events or crossovers such as this one or Blackest Night is that it seems the length is predetermined and the creative team simply stretches the story to fit the issue length. It is clear there wasn't enough story for fourteen chapters. This issue is basically filler and yet it was strangely one of the better issues of the crossover.

Chew kicks off a new arc, called Just Desserts, with this issue. You might expect the first issue of an arc to be mostly setup with some new mystery popping up. They aren't usually the kind of issue that blows you away. However, this issue shines because of the amazing character work and the storytelling ability of the creative team. Tony Chu has a wild ride in this issue and it's a fantastic read all the way through.

Bullseye becomes Frank Castle pre-Punisher in this issue as he kidnaps a family and assumes the role of the father in hopes of watching them get gunned down the same way Frank’s did. This issue is more creepy than the previous ones but no less powerful. Once again, Aaron delivers a story that has elements of sarcasm, humor, violence and strong characters. The story is entertaining and might even make you cringe a little bit while reading it. This is another great issue in the series.

Geek Goggle Reviews: Batman #700

Batman #700Batman #700
DC Comics
Morrison, Daniel, Finch, Kubert & Quitely

The first of DC’s big anniversary issues this month turns in an outstanding effort by the all-star creative team. The who’s who of big name artists teams with a terrific Grant Morrison story that spans three generations of Batman stories. However, the comic book simply doesn’t feel like an anniversary issue. Using the benchmarks set by Marvel Comic’s Amazing Spider-Man #600 and Captain America #600 where we are provided a significant page count of original material, this comic book falls into the realm of Incredible Hulk #600 where it’s a low page count padded with material no one really wants. Because of DC editorial, this issue is one to avoid if you are a casual passerby. Who would want to spend $5 on roughly thirty pages of story with a bunch of pinups and a Batcave guide?
