Yet another big number anniversary rolls out this week and yet again it delivers a different format to its content. Superman #700 contains three short stories, all with different creative teams, to tell three very different kinds of stories. While the content is original material, the issue only really contains about forty pages of story. It also contains a write up from the various Super-related titles to explain the direction for those titles. For $5 it's a tough sell.

Geek Goggle Reviews: Hulk #23

The question of "who is the red Hulk?", is seemingly answered in this issue. For about thirty five pages we get the complete picture of the creation of the person behind the red Hulk. It's more than just an origin story as it weaves the origin of the red Hulk throughout the previous green Hulk stories told over numerous decades. It's a good story because it used an army of artists to set the tone of the various time periods visited. As for the actual believability of the whole thing….well, let's just say you need to take a leap of faith on this one.

Chapter Twelve of the Second Coming crossover concludes one of the major plot lines in this issue. Well, at least, it appears to be resolved. This issue provides a ton of action and a nice, concise story. While the artwork gives a lot in the way of action it feels more like a series of pinups at times instead of an even flowing visual story. On the whole this is a good comic book where the writer plays to the strengths of the characters he typically works with.

This one shot appears, at first, to be ridiculous. It's about shark that lives in the woods and a bear that dwells in the ocean. For $5 you would simply have to be nuts to purchase it, right? I mean, the issue can't possibly be any good despite the creators attached to it, you know? Well, not only is it funny, clever and strange. It also happens to be well written and exceptionally illustrated. It's effectively a double feature as each character has its own full length, twenty-two page story. For $5, you really can't get much more bang for your buck these days.

This is the issue I think I have been waiting for the entire crossover. It took until chapter eleven of Second Coming but I finally got an issue where there was action, the plot moved and a couple of characters stood out from the noise and acted as you might expect them to. This issue moves quickly and really puts the crossover into a position that it seems to make sense as to where it is heading. Is it enough to save the crossover from being forgettable overall? I'm not sure about that but this is an enjoyable read nonetheless.

Walking Dead has a seemingly quiet issue this month as we follow along a couple of characters in their new daily lives living in a functioning town. However, the issue is accomplishing the impossible as it is turning the group of protagonists into antagonists in just a couple of short scenes. Characters that the reader has followed for years, that they have come to cheer for, are now being seen in a new light: aggressors. This is another step in that process as the main group begins to turn the corner in this issue. What might be seen as caution for some could be seen as an act of war by another. Things will explode soon.
