The collaborative work of author Andrew McGinn and illustrator David Neitzke, "The Legacy" is the story of a young man of artistic talent being saddled with the unwanted responsibility of continuing his successful cartoonist father's newspaper comic strip, thwarting his own ambitions of being a graphic novelist. A rollicking good read from beginning to end, "The Legacy" is thoroughly entertaining and carries an all to familiar message of what happens when parental expectations are foisted upon a most reluctant 'next generation'. Highly recommended for both personal and community library graphic novel collections, "The Legacy" is witty, poignant, and a terrific read!

The 2010 edition of Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year continues to offer a winning selection of comic strips and political commentary, and is a top pick for libraries that have seen popularity with other political commentary collections. The major events of the year - a year experiencing one of the worst economic downturns in U.S. history - are chronicled in a fine collection of black and white panels of observation, documentation, and humor.

This issue continues the process of turning Rick and his crew into the antagonists of the story. It's been a difficult build up and one that seems to be working, but only up to a point. This issue actually begins to place a divide among Rick's group from within in multiple places. I like the issue a lot because we are getting glimpses into various situations that Rick and friends are in. Some of them are in seemingly normal everyday routines but it's what's going on behind the scenes that are really making all of this fairly dramatic.

The Unwanted story arc begins with this issue. Essentially, the set up is that Carol, Dash's sometimes girlfriend and the daughter of the Chief, Red Crow, is pregnant. This issue really sets the stage to draw the comparisons between Carol's first pregnancy, the current pregnancy and her mother's pregnancy as well as the days of being a mother to Carol. The issue excels in its character work and the overall connections being drawn by the decisions and ramifications of the three pregnancies. The issue is among the best I've read in this series that doesn't contain any high level of violence. The way the issue plays out I also think a new comer could pick this up and find a compelling read.

One of my biggest criticisms of crossover and events of late is that they all seem to be filling an issue quota rather than telling the story in the natural amount of issues the story needs to come to its conclusion. The Second Coming crossover falls squarely in this category with this issue leading the way as the example of nothing really happening in it. This is a problem because it is the penultimate issue to the fourteen part crossover.
