Morning Glories is a comic book that immediately smells and feels like a comic book that is similar to the idea behind the X-Men. The premise is that gifted high school aged students are selected for enrollment into a special academy. However, the academy is not anything that appears to be good for the students as the comic book quickly veers off any path that might be confused as one similar to the X-Men. This issue establishes some of the key students of the current crop of enrollees and sets up the mystery and danger that the academy seems to hold. It's a very good idea, story and execution for an oversized opening issue.

Punisher meets 28 Days Later in the land of I Am Legend is the best way to summarize the premise of the latest Punisher mini series. Essentially the world is falling apart and the Punisher is left to deal with the masses, good or bad. The idea, in theory, sounds like it would be for a niche audience or a completist. However, the story is actually very entertaining and worth checking out if you like stories set in wasteland futures. This isn't just another Marvel Zombie story. And thankfully it doesn't contain vampires. Not yet anyway.

Geek Goggle Reviews: G.I. JOE A Real American Hero #157

IDW Comics
Hama & Padilla

Larry Hama's second issue of the revisiting of the old Marvel GI Joe title falls into more familiar territory than the previous issue. This issue continues the slow burn approach that IDW comics follow with regard to storytelling as the Joes continue to regroup and form some sort of organization in the face of disorganization. The issue reintroduces a couple of familiar characters and tries to establish some sort of a plot for the long term development of the series. It's an okay issue but it is not as strong as the last one.

Geek Goggle Reviews: Hellboy The Storm #2

Hellboy: The Storm #2Hellboy: The Storm #2 of 3
Dark Horse Comics
Mignola & Fegredo

On the surface this issue is just like many other Hellboy comics. Hellboy fights a giant of some kind while a demon or two have a long chat about how the world is going to end and what Hellboy's role may or may not be in the events. While this issue may contain those elements it also provides something we hardly ever see in the form of a Hellboy flashback to when he was a boy. This short sequence sets this book apart of many other Hellboy stories and really puts the very core of his character to the test for the reader to judge. This is an excellent issue.

50% Wool, 50% Asinine provides a fine new Argyle Sweater collection by a cartoonist whose panels may best be described as influenced by Gary Larson of The Far Side fame. Talking animals, insects, fairy tale characters and more regularly appear in his single panels, and this full-color presentation is a fine pick for any cartoon collection.

Dark Horse Comics
Remender, Hawthorne, Moore, Lucas & Loughridge

Heath Huston is back with this issue after a long layoff for his final arc in the stellar science fiction series. This issue doesn't just serve as the reintroduction of the character and the complex plot. It manages to take everything that came before and up the ante in more ways than one. Remender doesn't hold anything back in making this comic a joyride of emotions and surprises. This is an excellent comic.
