King & Gerads

This is a great comic book. Not good, not very good, but great. If you have any interest in political dramas or war-aftermath stories then I urge you to pick this comic book up. I don't believe you need to be familiar with any of the details around the US-Iraqi war or the time period that this takes place in. This is a fantastic first issue.

Part Three of the "Vader Down" crossover focuses on the rescue of Luke Skywalker. This particular issue has a lot of action, but it's contained to a few characters rather than the scope of Vader taking on the entire Rebellion by himself. The comic has some really good moments that mix in a surprise or two with some well-timed humor. The comic has a few spots that could have used a steady editorial hand, but for the most part this is a good read.

RED WOLF #1Red Wolf #1
Marvel Comics

Spinning out of the "Secret Wars" tie-in comic, "1872" comes "Red Wolf." The first issue is a standard story that takes the lead character and makes him the outsider in a rough town. Strangely, the comic then takes that outsider and dumps him a completely different setting where he is even more of an outsider by the comic's end. It's hard to say what this book's identity will be, but it appears to be a man out of his element. I'm not sure that is a very good selling point. The first issue is pretty much paint-by-the-numbers. If you are curious then give it a shot.

"Narcopolis: Continuum" is every bit the sci-fi thriller that the pitch for the comic book promises. However, the initial issue also provides quite an interesting mystery and looks to have some crazy developments in store for the reader in the coming issues. Backed up with some interesting characters and stellar artwork, the read is a very good one. This is definitely a comic book to check out and a mini-series to keep your eye on if you enjoy a fast paced comic, some science fiction or just a good ole time traveling story.

Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur #1Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur #1
Marvel Comics
Reeder, Montclare, Bustos & Bonvillain

The legacy of Jack Kirby is alive and well as Marvel launches a new series based on seldom used characters that Kirby created some forty years ago. This particular series continues the trend of Marvel launching a brand new character with some relatively new voices on the creative side. The results are another comic that is fun, interesting and charming. I recommending checking this comic out.

Darth Vader #13Darth Vader #13
Marvel Comics

"Darth Vader" presents the second issue of the "Vader Down" crossover. The comic is good for a few reasons. First, the artwork looks great. It's polished and realistic. Second, the book brings together more players and moves them on a collision course with each other. Finally, the book captures some intense drama. This isn't to say that this comic is without flaws. It certainly has some, but for the most part, this is a good read. I recommend checking this out and picking up the one-shot that kicked this crossover off if you haven't already done so.

Dark Knight III The Master Race #1DK III: The Master Race #1
DC Comics
Miller, Azzarello, Kubert, Janson & Anderson

Frank Miller's "Dark Knight" gets resurrected for a third go round with an all-star creative team. This issue is largely introducing the characters and providing a nice cliffhanger to launch into the second issue. There isn't anything in here that will "wow" the reader in the same way the original Dark Knight probably did upon a first read. However, because the original was one of the best things DC Comics has ever published readers will return for more just in case this turns out to be a classic. This is an average elseworlds story with quite a presentation for six bucks. I recommend giving this a shot.

BATMAN EUROPA #1Batman: Europa #1 of 4
DC Comics
Casali, Azzarello, Camuncoli, Lee & Sinclair

"Batman: Europa" is a four-part mini-series that partners Batman with The Joker. The initial issue is well written with a great artistic presentation but ultimately feels like just another Batman comic book. The good news is that this book takes a more classic view of Batman and doesn't seem to be tied to any continuity. Overall, I enjoyed this comic book and I am looking forward in seeing how it evolves.
