Geek Goggle Reviews: STAR WARS #16

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Star Wars #16
Marvel Comics
Aaron, Yu, Alanguilan & Gho

"Star Wars" opens a new arc with a slow issue. This seems like a natural situation that Marvel finds itself in regarding Star Wars. Similar to Dark Horse, once the big, bold and epic stories were told, they slowed things down and went for arcs that had development and used smaller scenes and situations. You can't have Luke battle Boba Fett and then fight Vader then Vader against Jabba and so on. This appears to be where this title is heading and as a result you get setup issues like this one. It's a fine enough read.

Geek Goggle Reviews: THE MIGHTY THOR #4

The Mighty Thor #4
Marvel Comics
Aaron, Dauterman & Wilson

"The Mighty Thor" doesn't pull any punches with this installment. While the cliffhanger promises a great comic coming up next, this issue is quite a good one as well. In some ways there are a couple of major plots boiling to a head making this is a very packed comic book. The artwork appears to be outdoing itself each issue as the story builds. This is definitely an issue to check out.

Geek Goggle Reviews: BATMAN #49

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Batman #49
DC Comics
Snyder, Paquette & Fairbairn

This review contains spoilers. The spoiler free review is that this issue of "Batman" is a good look at what makes Batman a character that isn't like any other. This examination is done through the eyes of Bruce Wayne that knows he is Batman but can't remember anything about the alternate identity. Alfred also plays a heavy role in this emotional issue. The comic is a good one because it hits this angle of Bruce Wayne's responsibility to the city that is seldom seen in comics. The comic drifts into a science fiction-like way out of the current situation but it doesn't come across as ridiculous. This is a good read and worth checking out. This ends the spoiler free review.

Geek Goggle Reviews: STAR WARS DARTH VADER #16

Star Wars: Darth Vader #16
Marvel Comics
Gillen, Larroca & Delgado

"Darth Vader" provides another entertaining read that mixes some plot development, some action and a little bit of a longer view on the tensions between Vader and The Emperor. Coming out of a big crossover it probably is a good idea to make this issue as new reader friendly as possible which is exactly what it is. However, for the reader that's been with the entire series they are going to find a lot more of the same plot points and drama as in previous issues. As a result, I found this to be a very average read. It is exactly what you expect from a Darth Vader comic and nothing out of the ordinary.

Geek Goggle Goodbye

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle ReviewsThis is goodbye. There's no other way to say it. I've dreading informing Chuck, ComicList's founder, and I've been putting off writing this note for a long time now. I don't want to go, but it is time. Time, in fact, is the main enemy.

Geek Goggle Reviews: WALKING DEAD #151

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Walking Dead #151
Image Comics
Kirkman, Adlard, Gaudiano & Rathburn

"Walking Dead" takes an issue to show some training and for Rick to have a moment where he realizes he just isn't up to the day-to-day danger anymore. The comic is a very average read. Part of the problem is that the cast is just too big to really wrap any emotion around more than a handful of characters. The artwork is rock solid, which helps this issue along. This is worth a look but really highlights some of the problems with the series as a whole.

Geek Goggle Reviews: STAR WARS OBI-WAN AND ANAKIN #2

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin #2
Marvel Comics
Soule, Checchetto & Mossa

"Obi-Wan and Anakin" continues with another issue that focuses more on their relationship and that of Anakin and Palpatine than it does on the plot. The plot ties in with the exploration of the relationship, but mostly through some parallels and behavior that would prove ironic when you consider the fate of the Jedi, Palpatine, Obi-Wan and Anakin. I enjoyed the read, but I am also someone that has been looking for a deeper look at the teacher-student aspect of Obi-Wan and Anakin for a long time. When taken into context the comic is fairly average but has appeal to those looking for more story about these characters than the movies or the TV show provided. This is worth a read.

Geek Goggle Reviews: HELLBOY WINTER SPECIAL #1

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Hellboy: Winter Special #1
Dark Horse Comics
Mignola, Allie, Sale, Roberson, Walsh, Cain, Avon Oeming, Rankine & Stewart

"Hellboy: Winter Special" is an anthology of sorts that bring a wide range of writers and artists to contribute to shorter stories, most of which feature Hellboy. The general themes are winter and demons. This is a good issue to pick up and get a few snippets of Hellboy but he isn't really on display for the entire comic. If you skip the issue you aren't missing anything. This is a decent read.
