(San Diego, August 27) IDW Publishing sets its gaze skyward with Nightwings, the first installment of the company’s new science fiction series, New Classics of the Fantastic. In the Hugo Award-winning Nightwings, Earth’s long descent into hopelessness and despair created a civilization divided into guilds. One such guild is the Watchers, charged with keeping vigilant watch over the heavens against the alien invasion prophecy has long expected. It became all the more apparent to me when I looked at a comic from this series for reference, only to realize it had come out two years ago. This issue brings that much back into the fold after all that time. However, the winning combination for this issue is the action mixed with chaos and the puzzle pieces being put together by the likes of Jetfire and Optimus Prime. Oh, there are still a ton of questions, but only a few less. The art takes the center stage yet again. (San Diego, August 13, 2008) -- What is Fubear? Fubear is the schism that exists between "funny ha-ha” and “funny-strange.” At least that’s what creator David Slade tells us. Coming this August from IDW Publishing, Fubear is a nice, small, square hardcover collection of the illustrations which served as inspiration for the animated comic/horror short "Meatdog: What’s Fer Dinner”, a short film that premiered at Comic Con in July 2008 and will play to the over seven million users of Xbox LIVE this fall. The larger-than-life personal stories and come-from-behind political victories of the presumptive candidates, Senator Barack Obama (Dem; IL) and Senator John McCain (Rep; AZ), have electrified the political discourse in this country and around the world. Now IDW Publishing (www.idwpublishing.com) is pleased to present an extraordinary venture in this political year: a pair of biographies, PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL: BARACK OBAMA (Author: Jeff Mariotte/Artist: Tom Morgan) and PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL: JOHN MCCAIN (Author: Andy Helfer/Artist: Stephen Thompson) presented in one of the true American art forms, the comic book. These graphic novel biographies are painstakingly researched with beautifully drawn depictions highlighting key incidents in the lives of the two men. Sure to be a hot collector's item, the books can be pre-ordered starting today at www.presidentialcomics.com in advance of the October 8 publication date. In addition to the separate tomes, the two issues will also be available in a special trade paperback flip-book edition. ![]() Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews Transformers Spotlight: Hardhead This comic tries to do two things and ends up failing to do either one effectively. First off, it tries to give a quality one shot story for Hardhead. It doesn’t do this with any satisfaction. Secondly, it tries to advance the overall plot of main arc in four or five directions. It manages to catch my attention on only one or two. As such, this issue feels like it is all over the place and has way too many characters to keep track of. It feels like the comic is in over its head. Or hardhead. Ha-ha. (San Diego, July 17, 2008) Werewolf necrophilia and talking rats are just a small part of the dark, creepy action in Ben Templesmith’s new miniseries, Welcome to Hoxford, debuting in August from IDW Publishing. The co-creator of 30 Days of Night (with writer Steve Niles), Templesmith has built quite a fan following in recent years, including critical and sales successes with titles he has both written and created artwork for, including Wormwood Gentleman Corpse and Singularity 7.
