The anniversary issue. Always hit or miss. This one comes in with a standard length story, a ten page backup, a villain gallery, an interview with Parker and a brief history of Thunderbolt Ross, all for four bucks. Before I even read a page of the story I knew I had value for my money. I'm pleased to say that this book is a good read and provides readers with enough mystery and intrigue to come back for more. Overall, I would call this anniversary issue a success on multiple fronts.

Banner and the green Hulk square off on the crazy, creature, Island, filled with Hulk-ed out creatures in the latest issue of the Incredible Hulk. The one line sentence summary makes the book sound interesting and exciting. However, the comic book is a complete mess. I never like to trample on creator's work because I understand that this is a complete team effort from writer all the way down to the printer. That said, this is not only an awful book to look at, but it is also the worst Jason Aaron comic book I have ever read. I don't believe I have ever recommending avoiding a Jason Aaron comic, but this is the one.

HulkMedia Release -- This past weekend, Superbowl watchers were treated to the new Avengers trailer showing the heroes in action, including our first full look at the gargantuan Hulk. Well, the Marvel Select toy line has been making waves lately with its larger figures, which tower over other entries in the 7-inch-scale line, and last week they finally unveiled their movie version of the Hulk! Standing 8.25 inches tall, he stands a good inch taller than the rest of the movie-based Avengers DST has made, and features 16 points of articulation for a full range of smashing. He's available for pre-order now from your local comic shop and from online retailers, as are Hawkeye and DST's figure of one of the movie's mystery foes!

Yikes, this relaunch is shaping to be a real misfire. The third issue continues to tell a very slow story but it adds a lot of fighting to make it appear like something is happening. This series is beginning to remind me a lot of Jeph Loeb's Hulk series except the Hulk is fighting monsters this time around instead of Marvel super-hero guest stars. I understand Aaron is trying to build up Hulk as his own entity (without Banner) and give him some purpose for getting involved with Banner again, but this story is just not dense enough. This is another disappointing issue.

Marvel's big re-launch of the Incredible Hulk brings a high profile creative team and a new direction. All of which makes for good criteria for a re-launch. With DC Comics rebooting and launching their entire line in September I find myself comparing this number one with the likes of those number ones but that may not be totally applicable because the history of the character remains intact. In any case I found this issue to be lacking in many areas. Essentially this issue doesn't provide much story and I'm not sure the slow burn approach is the way to go with a high profile first issue as this one seems to do.
