My son and I made our annual trip to Suncoast Comics in Jacksonville, FL, for Free Comic Book Day. Much as we found last year, there was a festive atmosphere, and the store, sidewalk and parking lot were packed with customers picking up free items (and buying lots of stuff, too) and very helpful employees guiding everyone along. Having seen what a wonderful job they do at Suncoast putting on a Free Comic Book Day, it's my hope everyone who reads this was able to a similarly great time at their local comic book shop. Despite everything I read about the future of comic books, it gives me confidence this industry can survive and thrive. Visitors were initially greeted by a large FCBD sign by the street and several costumed comic lovers, encouraging them come on in. Also heralding the delights that awaited anyone who stopped was a very large Silver Surfer, attached to the top of a car. Once we approached the store, we found MORE people in costume, and a lot of comics and toys outside the store. The gentleman in shorts with a beard and glasses is "Bill III." I had a chance to talk to him for a few minutes, and he struck me as the kind of comic book shop owner/operator every store should have: someone passionate about comics and related products, yet business minded enough to know being successful requires outstanding customer service. What I saw and heard was a focus on being helpful and knowledgeable to people in the store, and making everyone, no matter their level of expertise or interest, feel like this was the best place to buy a comic, toy, or anything else. Five stars to everyone involved! Now, how was YOUR Free Comic Book Day? Leave a comment here!
