Media Release -- When comic book fans think of “Black Superheroes” one name stands out as an iconic representation of Black heroes in the industry: Powerman (aka Luke Cage), who has been exciting fans since his first appearance in Hero for Hire #1 published in June 1972. These days the powerful hero has been re-imagined from his ‘70’s origin. Trading in his highly- recognizable silk shirt and silver headband for a three piece suit and fedora, renowned artist and illustrator Shawn Martinbrough takes an alternative approach to the proud, wise and “bullet-proof” African- American character in Luke Cake: Noir. Martinbrough equips the series with just enough dramatic lighting and deep shadows to recreate the classic style found in crime and detective driven storytelling of the Film Noir era. Set against a backdrop of alcohol prohibition and civil rights unrest, Martinbrough illustrates drama, heroism and cinema onto the comic page. Martinbrough will be on hand at the 9th Annual East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (ECBACC) on Saturday, May 15th, 2010 to discuss this work and his latest publication How to Draw Noir Comics.

KYW Newsradio 1060 Philadelphia has issued this handy announcement regarding The East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention 2009.
African-American graphic artists from around the country are meeting in Philadelphia this weekend for an annual convention.
The East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention gathers African-American comic book artists every year to share their work and techniques and the latest in the genre.
Yumy Odom is a Philadelphia-based graphic artist and founder of the convention:
"This annual reunion of us really is a chance for the public to get to know who is writing these comic books. We have people writing for DC, for Marvel, and a whole lot of independent comic creators."
Meki Ra, a graphic artist from Germantown who will be teaching workshops to young people this weekend, has this advice:
"Having a vision of where you see yourself in the big scheme of things."
The convention is being held Friday and Saturday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 18th and Market Streets.
