Criminal: The Last of Innocent #1

Criminal is back with a new arc and a bit of a different type of story with the first issue of the "Last of the Innocent" story. Normally these stores are all great but for the most part they have followed the same pattern as they looked solely at the underbelly of some seedy city filled with shady characters. This story arc takes on more of a normal, everyday looking set-up. The characters don't appear to be criminals, but more of the regular folk that have relatively normal, boring lives. However, the thread of crime is in the book, particularly in the end, as one of the characters starts to cross the line into that murky world. The artwork is terrific as Phillips breaks out in a way I haven't seen before. Add in the back matter of Brubaker's thoughts and an essay and you have a healthy read for your money.
Media Release -- The best-selling crime comic of the decade finally returns with Criminal: The Last Of The Innocent #1, from the acclaimed team of writer Ed Brubaker (Captain America, Secret Avengers), artist Sean Phillips (Dark Tower) and colorist Val Staples.
Media Release -- The Eisner-winning team of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips have brought their acclaimed Criminal and Incognito series to your favorite mobile device! Criminal #1, Criminal #2, from the original series launch, and Incognito #1 are now available to iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users through the Comixology, Iverse and Panefly applications, while PSP users can download directly to their device as of April 22nd!

Tracy Lawless finds a way to survive in this issue but he just keeps making more and more enemies it seems. The Sinners begins to tighten up the plot of initial murders that started the series off but by the end of this issue the story gets pulled into an entirely different direction as the body count mounts.

Criminal: The Sinners delivers another amazing issue this month. Not only does the plot become very, very complicated, but also more and more players are getting dragged into this story making things a bit of a mess for Tracy Lawless. At this point I would think those that like this series and this type of storytelling are going to love this comic book. For all of the rest you….well…this is my chance to change your mind.

Criminal: The Sinners #2

As the second issue of Criminal: The Sinners unfolds we, the reader, begin to understand that Tracy's investigation isn't as straight forward as connecting a couple of deaths together. We, as the reader, are also lucky because we get a glimpse into the who the killer may be which allows us to understand just how close or far Tracy is from cracking the case. The comic has a terrific narrative as Tracy runs all the possibilities through his head. While, in the shadows of the scenes Tracy leaves behind we, the audience, are allowed to see what Tracy just barely missed by walking away. It's a great story and manages to draw the reader in and see things as Tracy sees them and then as a fly on the wall sees them. This is an outstanding issue.

Criminal returns with another story centering around the character of Tracy Lawless. This comic definitely alludes to previous story arcs with Lawless, but having prior knowledge of the character is not necessary. Tracy is a failed hitman in this story and his boss gives him a chance to redeem himself by giving him a mystery to solve. As Tracy investigates the case he finds that the case is anything but straight forward. It's an excellent beginning to an arc.
