Chew rolls on with the middle issue to the Major League Chew arc with another outstanding comic book. Layman and Guillory continue to surprise, delight, humor and shock with their unique story. This particularly issue explains why Tony was captured and it puts a new twist on Tony's former partner, Colby, and his new career. It's fantastically creative read in what is one of my favorite all-time series.

With a generous gap between the first issue of this arc (Major League Chew) and this issue I was prepared to be a little lost. Instead, Chew #22 gives me the same high level of entertainment I have come to know from virtually all of the previous issues in this series. This issue really explores the powers that Tony's daughter, Olive, possesses and it manages to put Tony into danger despite his new job as a parking violation cop. This is another installment in a series that is funny, gross, smart and clever.

I'm always surprised at how John Layman and Rob Guillory can draw me in to each month's issue of Chew. They never seem to miss a beat. That's why these guys get my money every month.

Part Two of the "Flambé" arc delivers an excellent read because of the unexpected focus. Layman dives immediately into exploring the character, Olive, Tony Chu's daughter. This allows a couple of things that make for a fun read, one of which is how much she looks up to Tony's partner, Colby. Overall the issue just adds to the bizarre tapestry that Chew has been building since the beginning. You don't get answers but you get a lot more oddities that make you want to read more. Great writing and amazing art tend to do that to you in comic books.

Chew kicks off the new arc, Flambé, by introducing a couple of new characters and taking the overall direction of the story into a mood we've not really seen before. The book deals with the apparent alien presence from the previous issue only somewhat but the effects are obvious in the actions of the characters and the tone of the environment. The book is as good as ever and this issue serves up an interesting and entertaining start to the next arc.

The finale of the Just Desserts arc introduces a slew of new characters and gives one of the goofiest, surprise endings I've seen in a while. The comic book gives the usual array of interesting characters, excellent storytelling and creative artwork. This issue also contains a brilliant fold-out cover where the entire cast is posing in a bizarre Last Supper nod. It's a fun read that just adds to the long list of reasons that you should be reading this series if you are looking for something different.

As the "Just Desserts" arc races towards its conclusion, the penultimate chapter delivers one more example as to why this might very well be the best comic book on the stands today. Tony's past comes back to haunt him in more ways than one as his love life and his professional life seem to be on the verge of caving in. The issue has the right mix of action, mystery, laughs and gore. Throw in a few surprises and another epic cover and you have a terrific read cover to cover.
