Howdy!
A very quick summary this morning, as we're preparing to drive the 1,050 miles back to Colorado in just a few moments. First, Sunday at the convention rocked! After a dismal Saturday of sales, everyone came back to the show on Sunday, and spent money on trade paperbacks and hardbacks with a vengeance. We had our best day ever at the convention, which allowed us to (finally...) earn a small profit. Whew! It feels really, really good to have pulled it out at the very end!

Howdy!
What a revolting turn of events. Sometimes, I am simply stunned at how seemingly good ideas can backfire so badly. In this particular instance, the San Diego convention team decided to carefully limit attendance on Saturday at this year's show, in order to avoid the dreadful overcrowding that occurred last year. Well, it worked. By unanimous vote of all the dealers with whom I spoke this afternoon, however, this is the worst Saturday in terms of sales (at least proportionate to the robust sales days of earlier in the convention) that any of them have ever experienced in San Diego. Saturday is supposed to be the best sales day of the San Diego convention, but instead, the Saturday of the 2007 show may well turn out to be the worst.

Howdy!
I had to recover this morning, as I just about went down for the count. I don't know why it occurs, but my West Nile illness suddenly hit me at about 9 AM, and by 11 I was thinking that I might just pass out right in the middle of our booth at the convention. !@#$%^ I can't even express to you how frustrating that is for me, as I have been taking really good care of myself, eating well, and at least in my opinion, getting enough rest. I should have been just fine this morning, but instead my head was throbbing, my IQ dropped by about 30 points, I was overwhelmed with nausea, and I was so weary that I almost had to lay down on the floor behind the booth.

Howdy!
I'm a bit weary today, as I was here at the convention center until 11 PM last evening. The "Preview Night" hours were only from 6 PM - 9 PM, but Lynne and I had to stay after hours in order to send a young man to jail. We caught him shoplifting (he was working a "swarm" along with three of his friends...), and our policy is to always prosecute thieves. I actually feel really bad about calling the police about a $30 attempted theft, as I genuinely have no desire to cause anyone else harm. But the reality at a huge show like this is that if you don't work aggressively to stymie thieves, they will strip your booth in a matter of hours.

I'll start off today, by letting you know that this newsletter was not ever supposed to be written. When we were planning for this year's convention, it quickly became evident that we had ordered so many books to sell in our display that we had no choice but to cover all of our front tables with huge stacks of books. That meant no computers this year. That bummed me out a little, but the computers were really more for show, than actual function. We always took a few special orders via the machines, but my writing my daily newsletter was the primary purpose for having the continuous link. When having to choose, however, between selling vastly more product on site or writing the newsletter, I ultimately decided that extra book display took priority.
