Mike Mignola's comic Hellboy started out 15 years ago as a series of short stories featuring Hellboy, a big, red, demonic paranormal investigator with a wry sense of humor, dealing with the supernatural world. Since then, Hellboy has spawned another series, B.P.R.D., as well as a plethora of one-shots, miniseries, and collections.
We got to sit down with Mignola and ask him about the birth of Hellboy, the future of the B.P.R.D., and how he plans to continue to make the Hellboy universe accessible to future readers:
After the overwhelming praise from fans and critics alike for B.P.R.D.: 1946, Mike Mignola and cowriter Joshua Dysart return to the Hellboy universe for B.P.R.D.: 1947, a five-issue miniseries continuing the early exploits of the fledgling Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense and its founder, Trevor Bruttenhom—occult investigator and guardian of the infant Hellboy.
With Hellboy II: The Golden Army coming in July, there’s no better time to get up to speed on what’s happening with the characters in the B.P.R.D. Dark Horse will be releasing three new B.P.R.D. titles by Mike Mignola and B.P.R.D. vet John Arcudi into the Hellboy Universe for summer reading pleasure—with new revelations for Liz Sherman and the origin story for Johann Kraus, as well as a bit of backstory for the Bureau’s battle with the infamous frog creatures.
