Batman: Battle For The Cowl, issues 1-3, published by DC Comics, 40 pages, $3.99.
For those not “in the know” where the world of comics is concerned, DC comics has (seemingly) killed off Batman/Bruce Wayne. A new hero’s head is needed on which to hang the cowl, and that was (ostensibly) the point of DC Comics’ three issue miniseries, Batman: Battle For The Cowl. I wish I could say that the result lives up to the hype and promising premise.

This issue wraps up the event to determine which character would become Batman. It became obvious while reading this issue that this series was really focusing on the previous Robins and all of the other plots were merely sitting out there to occupy the other characters and to be used in future stories. There was way too much going on to deal with all of the Robins, plus the three-headed villain war and any other loose thread out there. This is a good comic with the interaction between two of the characters in it. However, as an event or even the final chapter of a highly publicized story arc, it’s a little disappointing.

Battle for the Cowl: The Underground One-Shot

This one shot issue explores the villains of Batman as the event occurs around them that is to determine who will wear the cowl. The issue isn’t as much of a one shot as it is a gap-filler in the main mini series. In that regard the issue really belongs in the main series. Or on the other hand it’s proof that the Battle for the Cowl mini series is just trying to jam too much into the story. It’s a good issue but it’s one for someone who wants the full picture of the Battle for the Cowl event.
This March, the epic “Battle for the Cowl” story gets underway in the pages of BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL #1, BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL – COMMISSIONER GORDON #1, AZRAEL: DEATH’S DARK KNIGHT #1, ORACLE #1 and GOTHAM GAZETTE: BATMAN DEAD? #1.
Now, DC Comics reveals the full lineup of artists contributing to this issue, written by Fabian Nicieza: DETECTIVE COMICS artist Dustin Nguyen, as well as Guillem March, ChrisCross, Jamie MacElvie, and the team of Alex Konat and Mark McKenna.
